I've done a lot of playing with this. I love it. If both Uke's arms are extended high up on my chest (nipple line), I do this version. If Uke only has one arm extended high up on my chest, I do Pedro's straight on arm bar he pulled off on Mr. Utah. It's a great 1-2 punch option. If Uke's arms are bent...well, then they probably aren't that high up on my chest to where I'd go for any arm bar. In that situation, I'd just try to break them down in order to sweep them, or arm drag to back take. Point being, if they extend their arm at or above your mid chest line, it's a gift - Accept it, graciously (and deceptively :D haha).

I stay pinching with the knees, which naturally pulls them to the slimmest bit of the waist...the important part is getting them on the lowest rib....the floating rib. If placement is correct, its works everytime. Yes, great against wrestler types why want to stack you.

What prevents guy on bottom from going to half guard right before top guy starts going for the collar? At that point, the top guy’s outside leg hardly has any weight on it.

All the mentioned reasons are valid. The last reason especially is critical. Regardless of the change that life gives, if you don't a supportive instructor, there's no progress as a student .

As many other positions in Jiu Jitsu these only work for competitions, not for real fight. In a real fight the opponent has both hands free to scratch, rip off your throat, finger jabbing or finger ripping, ribs hurt, groing damage,, biting, ...
